Announcing the Academy

The Academy is a new initiative designed to make anticapitalist education accessible to everyone, wherever you're based. It features online courses exploring essential themes such as feminism, anti-fascism and anti-colonialism.

We're hugely excited that our first course is led by acclaimed author and activist Lola Olufemi. Themed around Revolutionary Feminism, in five lectures Lola expertly untangles diverse feminist thinking, exposes the pitfalls of liberal feminism, and guides you towards understanding feminism as a tool for creating genuine freedom, democracy and justice.

Courses are free with any membership.

In 2025 we launched a campaign to build 100 reading groups. We hope you can be a part of it!

We're already over half way to our goal, with over 50 new reading groups in community centres, cafes, bookshops and workplaces. If you would like to start your own, or if you are part of an organisation that would like to host a reading group, we would love to hear from you. We offer training and a support network for all volunteers.

Founded by publisher Victor Gollancz in 1936, the original Left Book Club had 57,000 members. It is widely credited with paving the way for Labour’s landslide victory in 1945 and the creation of the welfare state. At least eight members of the 1945 Labour cabinet were Left Book Club authors, including Clement Attlee. Another famous Left Book Club author was George Orwell, as the LBC published the original edition of The Road to Wigan Pier.

Books were printed in their thousands and sent out to members every month via local bookshops.
